    For Judith Minty, An Evening of Memories and Celebration.
    Shiras Room Peter White Library.
    On Wednesday, August 1st at 7 PM in the Shiras Room of Peter White Library, poets from throughout Michigan will join with friends of Judith Minty to read her work and share memories. Singer/songwriter Terri Bocklund will perform original works inspired by Minty’s poems. Poetry from Yellow Dog Journal and other selected Minty pieces will be read.
    Participating authors include Martin Achatz, the Poet Laureate of the Upper Peninsula: Lynn Domina, Head of the English Department of NMU; Lisa Fosmo, poet from Escanaba; Kathleen M. Heideman, U.P. writer, artist and environmentalist; Jane Piirto PhD, Negaunee native, distinguished professor and author of 21 books; Christine Saari, Marquette and Austrian writer and visual artist; and Eric Torgesen, retired CMU professor and author of 8 books of poetry, 2 books of fiction and several books of translation. Sally Olson and Christine Saari will share stories from their friendship with Judith Minty.

    On August 28, 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. So, this August, in commemoration of the 55th anniversary of this event, join me for a poetry workshop about hopes and dreams. Let’s all keep Dr. King’s dream alive. Cost: $10

    Word in Action Poetry Flood Relief Reading
    Joy Center –
    Marty Achatz is organizing a poetry reading for Copper Country flood relief. It will take take place at the Joy Center in Ishpeming on Wednesday, August 8, at 7 p.m. He is looking for poets who would be interested in reading. He is also attempting to put together a basket of poetry to raffle off. If you are willing to donate signed copies of your books and/or broadsides, please message or e-mail him!
